BBC News School Report
BBC News School Report gives students in the UK the opportunity to make their own news reports for a real audience. Participating schools research and produce their own news reports on interesting things happening in their area. Teachers help develop students journalistic skills to become School Reporters, so they can report on the stories that matter to them and make their voices heard.
This year our team consists of students in Years 7, 8 and 9 managed by English teacher Mrs de Graaf.
We meet on Tuesday and Thursday lunch times in the English faculty in D4.
Any student interested in joining us should talk with Mrs de Graaf or any members of the student team. Please could you let us know if you have activities/events that are newsworthy for our newshounds to cover. The students will be wearing BBC School Report lanyards for identification.
Birchwood at the BBC
Seven students from Birchwood visited the BBC on Thursday 10 March 2016 as part of the 'School Report' TV series. They were one of only four schools nationwide who were given the opportunity to work alongside the BBC news desk for the day.
The students took part in a number of activities which included: News gathering, reporting and 'smart' Journalism. Throughout the day, they worked with top BBC journalists and they helped to update 'The School Report' news. They were able to talk to peers across the land in schools which are part of the project. Radio 1 DJ Greg James was on hand to work with the students and give them top tips about journalism and working in the Media.
There were many highlights of the day including a visit to the news desk by weather celebrity Carol Kirkwood. The students had a guided tour of the BBC and they saw the likes of George Alagiah preparing to present the 6 o'clock news. To round off an amazing day, the students toured the One Show studio and were given insight into what goes on behind the scenes. The Year 8 and 9 students had a fantastic day. One of them commented, 'my confidence has been boosted by speaking on the phone to interview people I had never met'.
Annual News Day
On Thursday 16 March we will be taking part in the annual News Day, simultaneously creating video, audio and text-based news reports, and publishing them on our website, to which the BBC links. Last year around 30,000 students from over 1,000 schools took part in the annual News Day.
2017 will be the second year Birchwood School has taken part.
