Hairspray

Over fifty students took part in our colourful, toe tapping extravaganza of Hairspray. The show ran over four nights and all seats were sold out! With students as young as Year 8 managing the responsibility of lead roles, lead dancers and also as part of the backstage crew it was a celebration of talent at the highest order.
Jonathan Cowen starred as Edna, Tracy’s Mum complete with a fat suit and full face of make-up, this was a wonder to behold!  Dillon Browne was shining in his professional portrayal as Corny Collins. The lead role of Tracy was double cast due to the unbelievable quality of auditions and Sophie Springham and Evie James did not disappoint with a quirky, American sass that had the audience singing and laughing along. The Birchwood band displayed a level of professionalism second to none – their calm brilliance in their musical performance left the audience wondering if a backing track was playing! This was an exceptional performance by all members of the production and the audience said they felt it had been a privilege to witness. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the show possible.

Christmas Carols

Christmas has truly arrived with Birchwood’s Music department’s annual Carols by Candlelight Service that took place on Wednesday 18 December at St Michael’s Church.

Isabelle Ramsay sang a fabulous solo “Once in Royal David City” as well as beautiful choir arrangements for Vocalise, Senior Choir, and Year 9 and 10 singers filling the church with harmonious singing. The Reverend Williams lead the service with readings from Mr C Gilbank - Deputy Principal, Anya Seifert, Matthew Reader, Mrs P Fowell and Lauren Gore. Mince pies and mulled wine gave the evening a special Christmas spirit.

Special thanks goes to David Pickthall MBE, our organist for the evening and to St Michael’s Church for letting us host this event.

Hip Hop

Last week our GCSE Dance students took part in a Hip Hop Commercial workshop with local Dance school KBD Dance.
The students really enjoyed learning a brand new style of Dance and the energy and commitment in the studio was outstanding.
We would like to say a HUGE thank you to Katie Baker for leading the workshop and hope to welcome you back soon. If you would like to find out more information about her weekly classes contact her on katie@kbddance.com to book a trial lesson.

Outstanding Secondary Dance Teaching Award Nominee

On Saturday 9 November the prestigious One Dance UK Awards were held in Manchester. One of the awards was the Outstanding Secondary Dance Teaching Award and we were delighted that Miss Adams, one of Birchwood’s very own, beat off competition from around the country to be one of only three teachers nominated in this category. Alas on the night the award went to another no doubt very deserving teacher but we were delighted that Miss Adams’ contribution to her Dance students was recognised as a nominee. Anyone who has been in one of her lessons or one of our school productions knows Miss Adams to be a teacher of the highest quality whose commitment to her subject and students is beyond question. We are glad that this work has been recognised on a national scale and we hope that Miss Adams enjoyed her richly deserved evening in the limelight!

Summer Prom Concert

Summer Prom Concert
On Wednesday 3 July we held our Summer Prom Concert in the school hall. The talent was outstanding with many students from across all years involved.
Performances included winners from Birchwood’s Got Talent and Young Musician of the Year competitions as well as Orchestra, Vocalise, Senior Choir, a Rock Duet and even a Ukulele group! Even the audience got a chance to join in with a rousing ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ finale.
Mr Grogan and Mr Stock would like to thank all staff and students who took part and for all their hard work and dedication.
