Students meet Olympian

On Thursday 21 October, four of our Year 9 students were invited to Hertfordshire Sports Village to become part of the Inclusion Champions Academy. Birchwood students, along with 60 other Year 9 students across Hertfordshire, took part in a two hour workshop where they had the opportunity to learn new skills and practise ideas, with a view to offering clubs for targeted groups of Birchwood students. Double Olympian and two times world champion rower, Tony Garbett was on hand to offer guidance and support. Even helping the Birchwood team when they were a member short in the sitting Volleyball event.
All of the students were amazing, Olympian Tony picking out the Birchwood students as being really pro-active and stand-out performers on the day.
Look out for the inaugural Inclusion Champions Clubs which will pop up at lunchtimes after half term. They will consist of a range of fun activities in a supportive environment.

Head Boy and Girl cycle, run, walk challenge...

To keep the Birchwood community physically and mentally healthy during lockdown our Head Boy and Head Girl have launched two challenges, one for the walkers and runners, covering the distance of 1400km for Lands End to John O’Groats and for the cyclists, to cover the distance of the Transcontinental race a total of 4000km.
Already a number of students, parents and staff have signed up and are using the challenge to beat the January blues and the lockdown lows. As a school, Birchwood is always looking at ways in which to
engage the community in offering as much sport and physical activity as possible. So if you have an idea of how we could support a local club, group or individuals in meeting their New Year fitness goals or supporting their club to develop or enhance their offer please contact community@birchwoodhigh.org.uk.

We would love to hear how we can support you.

PE Challenges

Each week, the PE department has been setting three different forms of exercises. They have been setting the challenges every Monday, Wednesday and Friday via Year Group Teams channel. So far various challenges have included Yoga, Alphabet Challenge, Heads or Tails, Boxing and much more.
Exercise is not only good for your heart and body, it really helps your mind as well!
So remember keeping active is good for your and good for your learning!

Sports Day

Waytemore won the House Sports Day. Thank you to Cornelius PLC for supporting this event and sponsoring the new House flags which look amazing!

Girls District Football

Girls Football Districts

The U15 Girls Football team came second in the Girls Football Districts narrowly losing to Herts and Essex.
The team was captained by Tally Miles in Year 10 and it is the last time our Year 10 girls will be able to play in the District tournament; thank you and well done to all the girls for their commitment to girls football during their time at Birchwood.

Dalby Forest

DALBY FOREST

Fourteen students from the cycle club and three teachers went on a trip to Dalby forest.
The first second we all jumped on the minibus, we all knew this was going to be a fun weekend! We were all ready and set for our four hour journey up to Yorkshire. Saturday morning we all woke up and had our lovely breakfast that kept us going for the day. After we got dressed, we set off to go to the bike rental shop. The bikes were amazing. Then we started off with an easy trail altogether. In the afternoon we could choose the red or the blue trail. For dinner we went to a very nice fish and chips restaurant in Whitby. When we finished dinner we went to Dracula’s castle and we had a really nice view of the horizon and the sea.
I’d like to thank Mr. Barratt, Miss Rolfe, Mr. Gilbank and Will’s grandparents for an amazing weekend and I can’t wait till the trip next year!

Rugby

U18 Cambridgeshire League Final

A massive congratulations to the senior XV rugby boys for their superb performance in the U18 Cambridgeshire League Final last night. Despite a narrow 28-22 loss, their performance was exceptional. We received many comments from Saffron Walden staff and parents, as well as members of the rugby club praising our team’s performance and conduct during and after the game. Thanks to all the staff and students that gave up their evening to come and watch. The support was incredible and helped make it my most memorable sporting fixture I have had a Birchwood. The boys were an absolute credit to the school.
