English and Media Faculty

The English Faculty at Birchwood High School aims to empower all of our students to communicate effectively in the wider world via their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.  We are a high achieving faculty, committed to supporting every child in reaching his or her potential.

An exciting and motivating curriculum is provided from year 7 to year 11, as we study a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts. In Key Stage 3, we focus on a broad spectrum of works from 19th Century poetry to contemporary texts, including using the study of film and drama to develop an understanding of the use of language in a variety of settings. This ensures a clear insight into how and why the English Language has developed, and helps students build their cultural capital.

Our Key Stage 4 students follow the AQA English Language and Literature course in English. We also offer GCSEs in Media and Film, which provide exciting opportunities to study a diverse range of set films and media texts and develop desktop publishing, web design and filmmaking skills using a state of the art Apple Mac suite to explore and pursue creative interests.

A number of our students continue to study with us at A level as we offer a range of subjects, including English Literature, English Language, Film and Media.

Globe Theatre

Year 11 Globe Trip

Year 11 visited the Globe Theatre in London to enhance their knowledge of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, which they are studying in class.
The day started off with a tour of the Globe, giving them key contextual knowledge to aid the students with forming top-level English responses. The students were then led off to various workshops. The aim was to enhance their knowledge of particular scenes, help them to form their own interpretations based on the themes and techniques used within the scene and also with the understanding of relationships between characters through role play and acting, such as Lord Capulet and Juliet.
