A Message from our Principal Student

Hello and welcome! I’m Gracie Salmon, Principal Student at Birchwood Sixth Form. I’m currently studying A-Level Spanish and Drama, along with BTEC Dance.

Birchwood Sixth Form is a vibrant and supportive community where students are encouraged to grow academically, socially, and personally. From the moment I joined, I felt welcomed and valued—thanks to the incredible staff and inclusive environment.

Here, you’ll find a wide range of opportunities, from leadership roles and extra-curricular activities to exciting trips abroad. These experiences have helped me build confidence, develop new skills, and make lasting friendships.

At Birchwood, every student matters. Our motto, “Your dreams, your future, our challenge,” truly reflects the care and commitment shown by our staff and the spirit of our school.

I’m proud to be part of Birchwood Sixth Form, and I’m excited for what lies ahead—for myself and for every student who chooses to join us.

Mr Ian Torrance, Head of Sixth Form

Meet the Team

The Sixth Form Pastoral Team consists of staff who are specialists that ensure students receive the very best support over their two years in the Sixth Form. The Sixth Form is led by Mr Ian Torrance, who, as Head of Sixth Form, has overall responsibility and provides strategic direction and leadership to the sixth form community.

Miss Dale, Head of Year 12, and Mr Clift, Head of Year 13, play a pivotal role in supporting students throughout their sixth form journey at Birchwood.

Miss Dale is dedicated to helping Year 12 students settle smoothly into sixth form life, providing guidance as they adapt to the increased independence and academic expectations of post-16 study. She ensures that students are well-supported during this important transition, fostering a positive and productive learning environment.

Mr Clift oversees the progress and wellbeing of Year 13 students, guiding them through their final year of school. He leads the Next Steps programme, offering tailored support with UCAS applications, career planning, and future pathways. His role is key in helping students maintain strong academic performance while preparing for life beyond Birchwood.

Mrs Crimes is our Careers Lead and is based in the Sixth Form Centre on a full-time basis, which means that she is intrinsic to daily life in the Sixth Form. With increasing numbers of students deciding not to apply to university and instead head into apprenticeships or the ‘world of work’, Mrs Crimes is able to provide advice to students and has been instrumental in ensuring that all students leave our doors with a clear direction of their next steps.
